Description

Pejman Radkani, MD, MSPH, FACS, is regional director of surgical oncology for Northwell Health's eastern region and chief of surgical oncology at Huntington Hospital. Dr. Radkani joined the Northwell Cancer Institute in October 2025 after eight years with the MedStar Health system in Washington, DC, where he served as chief of HPB surgery at the Washington Hospital Center and director of transplant oncology at Georgetown University Hospital . Dr. Radkani attended medical school in Iran and at the University of Miami. It was during his surgical residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center that he developed a passion for HPB. He remained at Mt Sinai for fellowships in surgical oncology, followed by HPB and transplant surgery. He undertook further training in robotic surgery at Yonsei School of Medicine in South Korea and Institute Mutualiste Montsoris in France, making him extremely comfortable with aggressive and difficult procedures in this complex area.Dr. Radkani's role at Northwell encompasses clinical care and research along with an administrative component. He was instrumental in the expansion of a major gastrointestinal (GI) cancer surgery program in the region. Yet his heart remains with his clinical work. Every time I meet a patient, I am able to see one of my family members in that person and treat them accordingly. We take care of the cancer and when that's resolved, I try to help ease any other challenges that are impacting the patient and their family. Maybe their caregiver is struggling with an illness. How can I help? His research efforts are focused on improving outcomes for pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cysts and cholangiocarcinoma. For this reason, Dr. Radkani advocates for minimally invasive robotic vs. traditional surgeries because he knows patients have better short term recovery physiological changes after minimally invasive cancer surgery. Robotic surgery helps patients get their GI function back faster, he says. They get back to their feet faster, they go home earlier and, importantly, can undergo postoperative chemotherapy and the rest of treatment more quickly. He is closely following how AI innovations will affect surgical possibilities, outcomes for patients and the role of surgeons in the operating room. Dr. Radkani is a member of several professional organizations and currently serves as a committee member for The Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA), where he helps choose the abstracts and speakers for annual meetings. Outside the hospital, he enjoys camping, kayaking, biking and off-roading.
